What are the six steps to open an Abra account?
The process to open an Abra account runs in a fixed order, and each step is covered in its own section below. Nothing is transferred until step five, and nothing is committed to a strategy until you approve it in writing at step six. Abra Capital Management, LP is an SEC-registered investment adviser. Registration does not imply a certain level of skill or training.
Submitting the application is not a commitment. It opens a file and assigns a contact who follows the process through to funding, so you always know who to call.
- Submit your application online or through client services.
- Complete identity verification (KYC) and source-of-funds review.
- Answer the suitability assessment.
- Meet your relationship manager.
- Fund the account by in-kind crypto transfer, wire or both.
- Choose your strategy: yield, lending, staking or custody-only.
What happens when you submit the application?
You apply online through the Abra account application or by contacting client services directly. The application asks for basic identity details, contact information, the account type you want (individual, joint, trust or entity), and a short description of the assets you plan to bring, whether digital assets held elsewhere or cash. Nothing is transferred at this stage and no documents are uploaded yet.
Have your approximate account size ready and state it in the application. The application takes a few minutes, and the file it opens is the reference for every later step.
How does identity verification (KYC) work?
Identity and source-of-funds verification are part of ACM's onboarding and compliance program. Investment advisers are not currently subject to the FinCEN investment-adviser AML rule, whose effective date has been delayed to January 1, 2028. You may be asked to provide a government-issued photo ID, proof of address and source-of-funds documentation pursuant to ACM's policies and applicable requirements.
For digital assets, source-of-funds review usually means showing the exchange or wallet history that establishes how you acquired the holdings. Exchange statements, purchase history exports or on-chain records are typical. Clear documents move quickest. Blurry scans, expired IDs and addresses that do not match are the most common reasons this step stalls.
KYC review generally completes within the 3 to 5 business day onboarding window. Entity and trust accounts may take longer because ACM's onboarding procedures may require verification of control persons and beneficial owners and additional entity documentation.
What does the suitability assessment cover?
ACM gathers information about your investment objectives, financial circumstances, risk tolerance and other relevant factors as part of its fiduciary and advisory process. You will answer questions about your investment objectives, time horizon, liquidity needs, income and net worth ranges, and your experience with digital assets. Answer them the way things are, not the way you think unlocks more products.
Risk tolerance matters most here. Digital assets are volatile, and some Abra strategies, including yield and lending, carry risks beyond price movement, such as counterparty and smart contract exposure. The assessment records how much of that you are willing to hold and shapes what your relationship manager proposes at the strategy step.
If your answers point away from a strategy you asked about, expect Abra to say so. A custody-only arrangement is a legitimate outcome, not a consolation prize.
What should you ask your relationship manager?
Your relationship manager is assigned once verification clears, and the first call is a working session rather than a pitch. Expect to cover your current holdings, how they are held today, what you want the assets to do, and any constraints such as tax lots you do not want to touch or assets you intend to keep in self-custody.
Questions worth asking: how are my assets titled and segregated, what does the custody arrangement look like, what are the fees and how are they charged, how do I reach you and how quickly, and what reporting will I receive. The manager should answer each one in plain terms. If you leave the call with open questions, ask for the answers in writing before you fund the account.
How do you fund the account?
You fund the account by in-kind crypto transfer, by wire, or both. An in-kind transfer moves Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana or another supported asset from your current exchange or wallet into your Abra custody account without selling it. Abra issues a deposit address for each asset and network; you send from your existing platform, and the assets settle into a segregated account titled to you. The full walkthrough, including platform-specific notes for Coinbase, Gemini and hardware wallets, is in the in-kind transfer guide.
Wires are the simpler path if you are starting from cash or want to buy digital assets through Abra rather than move existing holdings. Wire instructions come from your relationship manager and are verified by phone before you send. Confirm details by voice, never by email alone.
Eligible undeployed assets may be held with Fireblocks Trust Company, LLC, using Fireblocks technology as part of the operational infrastructure. Assets deployed to a strategy may leave that custody environment and become subject to the custody, counterparty, protocol or other risks of the applicable arrangement. ACM does not use client assets for its own borrowing or proprietary benefit. Funding is complete when the transfer confirms and appears in your account view. Your manager confirms receipt in writing.
How to transfer crypto in-kind to a custodian or adviserHow do you choose a strategy once the account is funded?
Once funded, you decide what the assets do. The main options are yield strategies such as BTCaf and USDaf, crypto-backed lending, staking of supported proof-of-stake assets, and custody-only, where assets sit in segregated custody and nothing else happens to them. Returns on BTCaf and USDaf are variable and not guaranteed. Third-party digital-asset financing opportunities identified by ACM may have rates and loan-to-value terms that vary by provider, collateral and market conditions; current terms should be confirmed before use. BTCaf and USDaf are issued by AbraFi and accessed through Abra Capital Management.
Allocation is not all-or-nothing. Clients may choose among custody, yield and available third-party financing arrangements based on their objectives, risk tolerance and applicable terms. Your relationship manager will model the mix against the objectives and risk tolerance you recorded in the suitability assessment. Nothing is committed until you approve it in writing, and allocations can be changed later as your needs change.
Abra products: yield strategies, crypto-backed loans, custody and tradingWhat documents do you need?
For an individual account, gather these before you apply: a current government-issued photo ID (passport or driver's license), a recent proof of address (utility bill, bank statement or lease), and source-of-funds documentation such as exchange statements, wallet transaction history or bank records. Have your tax identification number available.
For a joint account, each holder supplies the same set. For a trust, add the trust instrument or a certification of trust and identification for each trustee. For an LLC, corporation or family office entity, add formation documents, the operating agreement or bylaws, evidence of authority for the person opening the account, and identification for each beneficial owner above the ownership threshold set by federal customer due diligence rules. Your relationship manager sends a tailored checklist once the account type is confirmed, so you do not have to guess what applies.
How long does onboarding take?
Opening an Abra account takes roughly 3 to 5 business days from a complete application to a funded account. Identity verification is usually the longest single step, and the suitability assessment runs alongside it. The transfer itself often settles the same day once the deposit address is issued, and a wire arrives on the sending bank's normal schedule.
Three things extend the timeline: incomplete or unclear documents, entity or trust structures with several beneficial owners, and source-of-funds reviews for large or complex holdings. You can shorten all three by assembling the checklist above before you submit. If anything is going to take longer, your relationship manager tells you the reason and a revised date rather than leaving you waiting. Timelines are typical, not guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
There is no minimum to begin a managed account with Abra Capital Management. Each product states its own terms on its page.
Yes. You request a deposit address from Abra for each asset, then send from Coinbase using its standard withdrawal flow. Coinbase may require you to add the address to an allowlist and wait through a hold before the first send. The transfer is in-kind, so nothing is sold. Step-by-step instructions are in the in-kind transfer guide.
Yes. Wires suit clients who are funding with cash or who want to purchase digital assets through Abra rather than transfer existing holdings. Wire instructions come from your relationship manager and should be confirmed by phone before sending, since wire fraud usually starts with a changed email. International wire availability varies by jurisdiction; ask client services about your situation.
Identity verification usually completes within the overall 3 to 5 business day onboarding window, and often sooner for individual accounts with clean documents. Entity and trust accounts take longer because each beneficial owner and control person is verified. The quickest path is a current ID, a recent proof of address, and source-of-funds records that match the assets you are transferring.
Ask client services about joint ownership when you apply. Where a joint structure is available for your jurisdiction and account type, each holder completes identity verification separately and both sign the account documents. Trust and entity accounts are the usual alternative when a joint structure does not fit; your relationship manager will explain which works for your situation.
