How to Transfer Crypto In-Kind to a Custodian or Adviser

By Abra Research

Published Updated 6 min read

To transfer crypto in-kind is to move digital assets from one wallet or custodian to another without an intervening sale. A transfer between accounts owned by the same taxpayer generally may not constitute a taxable disposition, but tax treatment depends on the facts, including fees, conversions and changes in beneficial ownership. ACM accepts supported assets for transfer into a segregated account titled to the client at Fireblocks Trust Company, LLC.

Key takeaways

  • In-kind transfer: moving the same asset between accounts owned by the same taxpayer generally does not require an intervening sale; confirm the tax treatment and basis records for the particular transfer.
  • A same-taxpayer transfer generally may not be a taxable disposition, but IRS Notice 2014-21 does not specifically establish a blanket rule for every wallet-to-custodian transfer. Conversions, fees paid in digital assets and changes in beneficial ownership can have tax consequences. Consult a tax adviser.
  • Supported assets: BTC, ETH and ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum, SOL, and others on request.
  • Typical confirmation: same day for most networks; Bitcoin is usually the slowest, and platform-side holds can take longer than the chain.
  • Eligible assets may settle into a segregated account titled to the client with Fireblocks Trust Company, LLC. ACM does not use client assets for its own borrowing or proprietary benefit; assets later deployed to a strategy may be subject to different custody and counterparty arrangements.

What are the five steps to transfer crypto in-kind to Abra?

Every in-kind transfer follows the same sequence, whether you are sending from an exchange, a hardware wallet or a DeFi position you have unwound. The steps below are each covered in their own section. Two practices that can reduce transfer risk are verifying the address through a second channel and, where appropriate, sending a small test amount first.

Keep the transaction ID from the sending platform at every step. It is how you track settlement on a block explorer, how your relationship manager confirms receipt, and how you document the transfer date and quantity for tax records later.

  1. Open and verify your Abra account.
  2. Request a deposit address for each asset and network.
  3. Initiate the transfer from your current platform or wallet.
  4. Confirm on a block explorer and wait for settlement.
  5. Verify the assets in your Abra custody account.

Why do you need a verified Abra account first?

Transferring crypto in-kind requires an open, verified Abra account. Abra does not accept deposits from anyone who has not completed identity verification, so the account has to exist before a deposit address can be issued. If you have not applied yet, the onboarding guide covers the application, verification and suitability steps and lists the documents to gather.

Two things to settle before you transfer crypto in-kind. First, decide what you are transferring and from where, because source-of-funds documentation for those specific holdings is part of verification. Second, tell your relationship manager which assets and networks you plan to use so that addresses can be prepared in advance. Accounts are typically ready to receive within the 3 to 5 business day onboarding window.

How do you request and verify a deposit address?

Ask your relationship manager for a deposit address for each asset you plan to send. Abra issues addresses from its custody environment at Fireblocks Trust Company, LLC, which runs on Fireblocks MPC infrastructure, and each address is tied to your segregated account. Addresses are asset-specific and network-specific: a Bitcoin address, an Ethereum address and a Solana address are different things, and a token issued on Ethereum must go to an Ethereum address on the Ethereum network.

Confirm the address through a second channel before you send. Read it back on a call or verify it inside your account view rather than trusting a pasted string in an email. Send a small test amount first if the platform you are sending from allows it. This may add transaction fees but can reduce the risk of sending a larger amount to an incorrect address or network.

How do you send from Coinbase, Gemini or a hardware wallet?

On Coinbase, use the Send or Withdraw function, choose the asset, paste the Abra address, and select the matching network. Coinbase applies address allowlisting on many accounts; adding a new address can start a hold before the first send is allowed. Coinbase Custody clients withdraw through a separate workflow with their account team. On Gemini, use Transfer, then Withdraw, and choose the asset and network. Gemini also offers an approved-address list, which adds protection but requires the Abra address to be added and confirmed before you can send.

From a hardware wallet such as Ledger or Trezor, open the companion app, choose the account for the asset, paste the address, and confirm the transaction on the device screen. Read the address on the device itself, not the computer, before approving. Set a reasonable network fee; underpaying on Bitcoin can leave a transaction unconfirmed for hours.

Whatever the source, match the network exactly and send a test amount first when the platform allows it. Keep the transaction ID from the sending platform; you will use it to track settlement in the next step.

How long does settlement take on each network?

Once the transaction is broadcast, it needs enough network confirmations before Abra's custody system credits it to your account. Most supported networks settle the same day. Bitcoin takes longest because of its block interval and the number of confirmations required for larger amounts; Ethereum and Solana are typically quicker. The table below gives the general picture. Exact confirmation requirements are set by Abra's custody policy and can vary by amount.

Track progress with the transaction ID on a public block explorer for the network you used. The explorer shows how many confirmations the transaction has. If it shows as confirmed but is not yet visible in your Abra account, the custody system may still be completing its own checks; this is normal. Contact your relationship manager if the credit takes longer than the typical window in the table.

SlowestQuickest

Bitcoin

Same day; usually the slowest of the supported networks

Confirmations required scale with amount; the fee you set affects how quickly the transaction is included.

Ethereum

ETH and ERC-20 tokens
Same day; typically quicker than Bitcoin

Send tokens on the Ethereum network only; gas fees vary with congestion.

Solana

Same day; typically the quickest of the three

Confirm the token is native to Solana, not a wrapped version from another chain.

Other supported assets: Varies Ask your relationship manager for the current supported list and expected settlement time.
Times are typical under normal network conditions and are not guaranteed. Abra's custody policy sets the confirmations required before credit.

How do you verify the assets in Abra custody?

When the transfer settles, the assets appear in your Abra account view with the quantity received. Check the asset, the quantity and the network against your sending platform's record. Your relationship manager also confirms receipt in writing, including the transaction ID, so you have a matching record on both sides.

At this point, the assets are held in a segregated account titled to the client at Fireblocks Trust Company, LLC. ACM does not use client assets for its own borrowing or proprietary benefit. If assets are later allocated to a yield, lending or other strategy, they may leave the qualified-custody environment and become subject to the applicable strategy's custody, counterparty and protocol risks. Keep the confirmation with your records; it establishes the date of transfer and the quantity, both of which you will want for tax reporting later. Is an in-kind transfer a taxable event?

Generally, a transfer of the same digital asset between accounts owned by the same taxpayer may not constitute a sale or exchange. IRS Notice 2014-21 establishes that virtual currency is treated as property, but it does not by itself resolve every transfer scenario. Tax consequences can arise from conversions, fees paid in digital assets, changes in beneficial ownership or other facts, so basis and holding-period treatment should be confirmed with a qualified tax adviser.

There are exceptions worth knowing. If you convert to a different asset before transferring, for instance selling a token for Bitcoin so you can send Bitcoin, that conversion is a disposition. If a platform charges a withdrawal fee in the asset itself, the units used to pay the fee may be treated as disposed. And if the transfer is to an account owned by a different taxpayer, such as certain trusts, it may be a gift or a transfer with its own reporting.

The IRS asks a digital asset question on individual returns and is expanding broker reporting through Form 1099-DA, so keep records of the transfer date, quantity and transaction ID. This page is general information, not tax advice. Consult a qualified tax adviser about your situation.

What if you want to transfer from a DeFi protocol?

Assets locked in a DeFi protocol must be unwound before they can be sent to Abra. Withdraw liquidity from pools, unstake or unbond tokens, and repay any borrowing so that collateral is released to your wallet. Some protocols impose unbonding periods, so plan ahead. Once the assets are in a wallet you control, the transfer proceeds like any other.

Check whether the unwinding steps are themselves taxable. Exiting a liquidity position often returns different tokens than you deposited, and swapping a receipt token back to the underlying can be treated as a disposition. Also confirm the asset is one Abra supports; wrapped or protocol-specific versions of an asset may need to be unwrapped first.

Budget for gas. Each unwinding transaction on Ethereum costs a network fee, and fees rise when the network is busy. Keep enough of the native token in the wallet to pay for every step, including the final send to Abra.

Frequently asked questions

A transfer of the same Bitcoin between accounts owned by the same taxpayer generally may not constitute a sale or exchange, but IRS Notice 2014-21 does not specifically resolve every transfer scenario. Conversions, fees paid in digital assets or a change in beneficial ownership can create tax consequences. Consult a qualified tax adviser and preserve basis and transaction records.

Most supported networks settle the same day. Solana and Ethereum transfers are typically credited within the day; Bitcoin can take longer because more confirmations are required for larger amounts and the fee level affects inclusion. Platform-side holds, such as allowlist waiting periods at Coinbase or Gemini, are often the longest part of the whole process.

Yes. Request an Abra deposit address for the asset, add it in Coinbase, select the matching network, and send. If your Coinbase account uses address allowlisting, expect a hold before the first send to a new address. Send a small test amount first. Coinbase Custody clients withdraw through their account team using a separate workflow.

Abra accepts in-kind transfers of Bitcoin, Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens on the Ethereum network, Solana, and other supported assets into its custody environment at Fireblocks Trust Company, LLC. The supported list changes over time. Ask your relationship manager for the current list before initiating a transfer, and always match the network to the address you were given.

Blockchain transactions cannot be reversed, so a transfer to the wrong address or on the wrong network may be unrecoverable. This is why Abra asks you to verify the address by a second channel and send a test amount first. If you realize a mistake, contact your relationship manager immediately; in some wrong-network cases recovery is possible, but it is never guaranteed.
