What is qualified custody for digital assets?
Under the SEC's custody rule for investment advisers, a registered adviser that has custody of client assets must hold them with a qualified custodian: a bank, a trust company, a registered broker-dealer, or a similar regulated institution. The custodian holds the assets in an account that identifies the client as owner, or in a segregated account under the adviser's name as agent for clients. The adviser manages; the custodian holds.
For digital assets this matters more than usual, because the alternative is common and looks similar on a dashboard. Exchange custody means your coins sit in the exchange's omnibus wallet, commingled with everyone else's, and you hold an unsecured claim against the exchange's balance sheet. If the exchange fails, you are a creditor. Custody in a segregated account titled to you means the asset is yours, not a promise to you.
Abra's Vault keeps the two roles separate. Each client's assets sit in a separately managed account, or SMA, with title to the client. Abra Capital Management, an SEC-registered investment adviser, manages the account. Fireblocks Trust Company, LLC holds the assets.
