How to Earn Yield on Bitcoin: Methods, Risks and Rates

By Abra Research

Published Updated 8 min read

You can earn yield on Bitcoin through lending, DeFi protocols, delta-neutral trading strategies and covered calls, but Bitcoin itself cannot be staked. Each method funds its return with a different risk: borrower default, smart contract failure or basis risk. This guide explains each mechanism, how custody decides who bears a loss, and where Abra's BTCaf strategy fits.

Key takeaways

  • Bitcoin runs on proof of work, so there is no native Bitcoin staking. Every Bitcoin yield product is lending, DeFi, a hedged trading strategy or an options strategy underneath.
  • The rate tells you little about the risk. Who holds the coins, what is done with them and who regulates the operator decide what happens if something fails.
  • Abra's BTCaf strategy earns delta-neutral yield paid in BTC and keeps your Bitcoin in a separately managed account titled to you. The return is variable and not guaranteed.
  • Abra does not rehypothecate client assets. Bitcoin serves as collateral inside your own account and is not lent to third parties.
  • Yield received in Bitcoin is generally taxable as ordinary income at fair market value when credited, even though you have not sold anything.

Why can't you stake Bitcoin, and what does Bitcoin yield mean?

Bitcoin yield is a return earned on BTC that you continue to hold, measured in BTC. It is not staking. Ethereum and Solana run on proof of stake and pay validators for securing the network. Bitcoin's proof-of-work design has no validators to reward, so there is no native Bitcoin staking. Anyone offering yield on Bitcoin is doing something else with it, and the first question to ask is what.

There are three broad ways to earn yield on Bitcoin. Lending: a platform takes your BTC and lends it to institutional borrowers, paying you part of the interest. DeFi: your BTC is wrapped onto another chain and deposited into on-chain lending or liquidity protocols. Delta-neutral trading: the BTC serves as collateral or as one leg of a hedged position, and the return comes from a spread or funding rate rather than from price movement. Covered calls sit alongside these as an options-based approach.

Each way to earn yield on Bitcoin carries a different risk. Lending exposes you to the borrower and to the platform's balance sheet. DeFi exposes you to smart contract and bridge risk. Delta-neutral strategies expose you to basis risk and execution risk. Covered calls cap your upside. Products that advertise Bitcoin staking are usually one of these in different clothing, and the label should not change how you assess the risk.

How does lending Bitcoin for interest work?

In a lending model you transfer BTC to a platform, the platform lends it to trading firms or other institutional borrowers, and it pays you a share of the interest it collects. Under most terms of service the coins become the platform's property once deposited. Your account shows a balance, but the coins are somewhere else and your claim is on the company, not on the coins.

That structure works while borrowers pay. It stops working when they do not. Celsius Network and BlockFi both lent customer deposits to third parties. When those borrowers could not repay in 2022, the platforms could not return customer assets and filed for bankruptcy. Customers became unsecured creditors and waited years for partial recoveries.

Before lending Bitcoin to anyone, read the ownership and title clauses in the agreement, ask who the borrowers are, and ask what happens to your coins if the platform fails. A rate far above what the underlying activity can earn is a signal that leverage or hidden risk is funding it. The rehypothecation guide explains how to read those terms.

How does DeFi yield on wrapped Bitcoin work?

Bitcoin does not run the kind of smart contracts DeFi protocols need, so to use BTC on-chain you first wrap it. A custodian or a bridge holds your BTC and issues a token on Ethereum, Solana or another chain that represents it one to one. You then deposit the wrapped token into a lending protocol, where borrowers pay interest, or into a liquidity pool, where traders pay fees.

Rates are variable and move block by block. When demand to borrow is high, lending yields rise. When a protocol subsidizes deposits with its own token, headline yields spike and then fall when the incentives end. Some protocols let you stake or restake wrapped BTC on other chains, which is often marketed as Bitcoin staking. It adds the bridge and the protocol as failure points on top of the wrapping itself.

You hold the keys, which means no operator can freeze you out and no operator can help you either. A smart contract bug, an oracle failure, a bridge exploit or a lost seed phrase is your loss. DeFi yield suits holders who can read an audit, manage keys and monitor positions. For most holders it belongs in a small, deliberate slice rather than in the core position.

How do delta-neutral strategies earn yield on Bitcoin?

A delta-neutral strategy holds offsetting positions so that gains and losses from the Bitcoin price cancel out. The core example is the basis trade. Bitcoin futures often trade at a premium to spot. Buying spot and selling an equal amount of futures locks in that premium as the contract approaches expiry. With perpetual futures there is no expiry; instead, when more traders are long than short, longs pay shorts a periodic funding payment, and a position that is long spot and short the perpetual collects it.

Abra's Bitcoin yield strategy, BTCaf, works this way. Your BTC stays in your separately managed account under Fireblocks MPC custody. Against that BTC, the strategy borrows stablecoins at a conservative loan-to-value ratio, and the stablecoins, not the Bitcoin, are deployed into basis trades, institutional DeFi lending, stablecoin liquidity provision, tokenized credit and systematic covered calls. Earned yield is periodically converted to Bitcoin and added to your position.

BTCaf pays its yield in BTC and has been tracked since April 2024. The return is variable and not guaranteed. Funding rates can fall to zero or turn negative, borrowing costs can rise, and a strategy can lose money in a given period. The methodology page walks through each venue and its risk controls.

How do covered calls and structured dollar yield add to Bitcoin income?

A covered call sells someone else the right to buy your Bitcoin at a set price by a set date. You collect the option premium as income. If Bitcoin stays below the strike, you keep the premium and the coins. If it rises above the strike, you deliver the coins or the position is settled, and you give up the gain above that level. Covered calls convert some upside into steady income, which is why systematic call-writing appears inside BTCaf's allocation.

Structured dollar yield uses Bitcoin as collateral rather than as the earning asset. You borrow stablecoins against BTC and place them into a dollar yield strategy. Abra's USDaf dollar yield strategy earns from stablecoin lending and liquidity strategies; its return is variable and not guaranteed. The spread between the borrowing cost and the yield is the return, and the Bitcoin is at risk if its price falls far enough to trigger a liquidation.

Since the GENIUS Act of 2025, payment stablecoin issuers may not pay interest to holders simply for holding the coin. Stablecoin yield therefore comes from what is done with the coins, not from the issuer. Any figure you see is variable, not insured and not guaranteed, and the borrowing leg adds liquidation risk that plain holding does not carry. USDaf and BTCaf are issued by AbraFi and accessed through Abra Capital Management.

What yield can you realistically expect on Bitcoin?

Treat any single number as a snapshot. For protocol staking on Ethereum and Solana, the network sets the rate through its code and the share of supply staked, and it changes over time. For lending and DeFi, rates track borrowing demand and token incentives and can collapse without notice. For delta-neutral strategies, the basis and funding rates compress when demand for leverage is low.

BTCaf pays its yield in BTC and USDaf in dollar terms; both returns are variable and not guaranteed. For comparison, the FDIC national average savings rate was 0.38% in August 2026, insured up to the applicable limit. The gap between an insured rate and a crypto yield is the price of the risk you are taking, and if the gap narrows the case for taking that risk narrows with it.

Compare all-in cost, not the advertised rate. Ask whether the figure is gross or net of fees, how often it is paid, what it is paid in, and how quickly you can withdraw. BTCaf withdrawals, for example, are processed at the end of each month with a 30-day withdrawal period. A higher rate with monthly liquidity and a lower rate with instant access are not the same product.

How does custody decide who bears the loss if something fails?

The rate tells you almost nothing about where the risk sits. What matters is who holds the coins, what is done with them and who regulates the operator. Centralized lenders typically hold BTC in an omnibus wallet on their own balance sheet and lend it onward, so you hold a claim on the company. DeFi vaults are non-custodial: you hold the keys, interact with contracts directly and carry full smart contract exposure with no one to call.

Abra's structure is different from both. Your BTC sits in a separately managed account titled to you, with Fireblocks Trust Company, LLC. Key security uses Fireblocks multi-party computation, so private key material is split and no single party, including Abra, can move assets alone. Every transaction must pass a policy engine before it is broadcast. Abra does not rehypothecate client assets: in the yield strategy your Bitcoin serves as collateral inside your own account and is not lent to third parties.

This client-titled account structure is designed to segregate client assets from ACM's proprietary assets, subject to the governing custody, financing and strategy arrangements. It does not protect deployed stablecoins from a venue failure, and it does not remove basis or liquidation risk. The trade-offs are an advisory relationship, monthly rather than instant liquidity, and less control over individual positions than a DeFi vault gives you. Abra products are not bank deposits and are not FDIC or SIPC insured.

Is Bitcoin yield taxable?

Generally, yes. Yield received on Bitcoin is treated as ordinary income in the year you receive it, measured at the fair market value of the BTC on the date it is credited to you. Receiving it in Bitcoin rather than dollars does not change that, but it does mean you may owe tax on an asset you have not sold. Each credit also creates a new lot with its own cost basis and holding period.

When you later sell or exchange those BTC, you have a capital gain or loss against that basis. Transferring your existing BTC into an account titled to you is not a sale, so it is generally not a taxable event on its own. Staking rewards on ETH and SOL follow the same pattern. Abra does not provide tax advice. Confirm treatment with a qualified adviser and read the companion guide on the tax treatment of loans and yield.

How do you start earning yield on Bitcoin with Abra?

Open an account. That means identity verification and an advisory agreement with Abra Capital Management, LP, an SEC-registered investment adviser. There is no investment minimum for BTCaf and no management fee on the strategy.

Transfer your Bitcoin in kind. You send BTC from your wallet or exchange to your separately managed account; nothing is sold. Your BTC is then minted into BTCaf and the strategies deploy. Reporting is monthly, and withdrawals are processed at the end of each month with a 30-day withdrawal period. If you hold ETH or SOL as well, those can earn staking rewards through ETHaf and SOLaf inside the same account.

BTCaf may be relevant to eligible investors seeking Bitcoin-denominated yield exposure who can accept the strategy's liquidity terms and material risks. Suitability depends on the investor's objectives, circumstances and risk tolerance; there is no guaranteed rate. Abra Capital Management, LP is an SEC-registered investment adviser. Registration does not imply a certain level of skill or training.

Frequently asked questions

There are four: lending your BTC to a platform that lends it onward, depositing wrapped BTC into DeFi lending or liquidity protocols, running or buying into a delta-neutral strategy such as a basis trade, and writing covered calls. A fifth route uses Bitcoin as collateral to borrow stablecoins for a dollar yield strategy. Each funds its return with a different risk, and none of them is staking.

No. Bitcoin uses proof of work, so there are no validators to reward and no native staking. Products marketed as Bitcoin staking are lending, wrapping BTC onto another chain to use in a protocol, or a derivatives strategy. Those approaches carry borrower, bridge, smart contract or basis risk and should be evaluated on that basis, not on the staking label.

No yield on Bitcoin is risk-free. Lending exposes you to the platform and its borrowers, DeFi to smart contracts and bridges, and delta-neutral strategies to basis, funding and venue risk. What you can control is structure: whether your coins stay in an account titled to you, whether they are lent out, and whether the operator is regulated. Abra's BTCaf keeps BTC in a separately managed account and does not rehypothecate it, but the strategy can still lose money.

Your BTC is maintained through the applicable separately managed account structure and may serve as collateral for financing used in the strategy. Custody status and counterparty exposure depend on where assets are held or deployed during the strategy, and the applicable LTV is governed by the financing terms. The stablecoins are deployed into delta-hedged and stablecoin-side strategies such as basis trades, institutional DeFi lending and systematic covered calls. The earned yield is converted to Bitcoin and added to your position. BTCaf's return is variable and not guaranteed.

There is no investment minimum for BTCaf, and the strategy carries no management fee. You can open an account and deposit any amount of Bitcoin. Your adviser confirms current terms in writing before you allocate.

Not instantly. BTCaf withdrawals are processed at the end of each month with a 30-day withdrawal period, because the underlying strategies need time to unwind in an orderly way. If you need same-day access to part of your Bitcoin, hold that part in plain Vault custody rather than in the yield strategy. Liquidity terms are set out in the product documentation you receive at onboarding.
