  1. This is a fantastic feature, and I’m so excited to see Abra and Amex working together to bring this service to more customers. As a user of both Abra and Amex, congrats!

  3. Very cool. When will this feature be available to Amex cards worldwide? Canada would be a great place to start!

    1. We hope to expand this feature worldwide soon. However, we don’t currently have an exact date for when this will be possible.

  4. Just became an Abra user yesterday. Thrilled about the Amex association. When will the Amex update actually become available? The app is not yet displaying the Amex option. Also, if currency is set to BTC, will funds immediately be deposited as BTC?

    1. Hey Kerri,

Thanks for reaching out! The Amex update is being released to new users daily over the news few weeks, with the possibility of the full roll out being shorter than that. And yes, if your currency is set to BTC, then your funds will automatically be deposited as BTC.

      Regards,
      Max

    1. Hello Jerry,

Yes, it will show up as a payment option in your app. You should also expect an email from us when Amex has been turned on on your phone.

    1. Hey Rhea,

If the American Express virtual card has a four-digit CID code, then the card should work. We are still troubleshooting some of the cards, so if you have any problems adding your card please reach out to support@abra.com.

      Best Regards,
      Max

  5. Hi, I live in Sri lanka. Is it possible to buy bitcoin via this app if i add a amex card? We really don’t have a local Bitcoin exchange here. It would be cool if you guys allow it to buy and sell bitcoin via Abra. When can we expect the amex option in app? any release date?

    1. Hey Fadil,

Unfortunately, the American Express option for now only works in the United States. We hope to expand this feature globally ASAP. The option will be turned on gradually for our users over the next few weeks.

      Regards,
      Max

    1. Hey Dan,

    1. Hi Roy,

Thank you for writing to us.

At this time, we are only integrated with American Express. We do not have any plans for adding other credit cards at this time.

      Thank you,
      Max

  6. Hi, it’s been a few weeks so I’m wondering if the plan is still the same, and that we will still get an email when one’s app receives the update. It will be a very helpful feature–looking forward to it. Thanks!

    1. Hey Maryann,

We are continuing to release the AMEX option to new users gradually. We should released the option to several new batches of users, so make sure to check if you have it yet.

      Regards,
      Max

    1. Hey Kristi,

Thanks for reaching out. We are still opening up the Amex option on a rolling basis, so currently not all users have access to the option. For now, we simply ask that you have patience as we continue the rollout.

      Thanks,
      Max

    1. Hey John,

If you had the Amex option before, however currently do not, I would encourage you to reach out to our support team through the app. They should be able to identify any problem and help you restore your Amex option.

      Best Regards,

  7. Hi! I used my Amex card a few days ago to buy bitcoins. The transaction was posted in my Amex card account (plus fee) last Aug. 22. I already emailed Abra customer support center, gave the transaction number as posted in my Amex card and the amount posted. I am waiting for the reply.
My concern is that the transaction was posted 6 days ago, I was already charged with the purchase, but I don’t see the credit to my account, nor is it posted under my transaction history.
    Please help. Thanks!

    1. Hi David, sorry to hear that you’re having trouble. I will ensure that our support team follows up with you directly today.

  8. I’m somewhat disappointed. I drove 15 miles one way to Wal Mart so I could put money on my AMEX Bluebird card, downloaded app , read all the instructions and only to find out that its not fully rolled out yet. A public statement should be made on what is actually happening. No where have I read that ABRA was still beta testing this.

    1. Hey Rob,

We’re sorry about any inconvenience this may have caused you. We hope to have the AMEX feature rolled out to all of our users as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

      Regards,
      Max

    1. Hey Rich,

Your American Express option will be turned on from our side. We are still gradually rolling out the option to new users, so unfortunately I can’t provide you with an exact date that you will receive the option. Thanks for your feedback.

      -Max

    1. Hey Karen,

The American Express option is not being turned on by state, but instead to specific users. Please have patience while we continue to roll out the feature to everyone!

      Thanks,
      Max

  9. I’ve been waiting for the AMEX option for quite a while, and it still isn’t available. I don’t want to trust my money with a company that practices deceptive marketing.

    1. Hi George, the intent was not to be deceptive. Admittedly, our public rollout has taken longer than we had anticipated, and we do apologize for that.

The American Express option is available to most Abra users, but some of our newer users may not have this option available to them immediately. If you would like to use your Amex card with Abra, please open up your Abra app and use the ‘Contact Us’ link in the menu. There, you can request access via our support team.

Again, apologies for the delay, and thank you for your interest.

  10. Hi all,
I appreciate the service that you all are running, as well as the clean interface of the app itself. I’m new to Abra and am attempting to add my Amex card. Is support@abra.com the appropriate place to send requests for adding the American Express option? Thanks so much!

    1. Yep, that’s the one! It’s best to use the in-app email, though (Menu>Contact Us). That way, some useful info will automatically be appended to your message, and our support team can help you out more quickly.

  11. It is getting close to 90 days since I saw news of AMEX becoming available. I downloaded this wallet for that reason. Is this actually going to happen?

    1. Hi Lou. We agree – it’s taken a lot longer than it should have. Fortunately, you may request access via our support team – please open up your Abra app and use the ‘Contact Us’ link in the Menu to send an email requesting access to the Amex option. We apologize for the trouble.

  12. I used the AmEx options in September and it worked fine.
When I tried again this month it didn’t work. Called AmEx. They blame Abra, Abra blames AmEx.
Has this problem been solved yet?

    1. Hi Darrel. Apologies for the difficulty. While we can’t comment publicly on any individual user’s situation, our support team does report some instances where the user is getting different information from different parties. We do apologize for that – that must be frustrating. We do sync with American Express periodically to discuss issues such as these. On our side, we simply provide the information we see in our systems. I could recommend trying to contact American Express again, but I can’t guarantee that the answer would be different.

  13. Amex is not available, I tried to add my card, and it was rejected, I called AMEX and they said this is not available since they consider this like cash transactions, so everyone plz beware of this BS

    1. Hi Julio, sorry you’ve had difficulties. American Express has many different card types. A small number of these card types do consider these transactions as “cash advances” or “traveler’s checks” and as such, will not process them. Unfortunately, for these card types, there’s nothing either Abra or even American Express can do in the short term. We sincerely apologize for the frustration this must cause.

We have no timeline for a fix. If it’s an option for you, we recommend instead using one of our bank-based methods: https://support.abra.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002918627-What-are-Abra-s-transaction-limits-new-

    1. Thanks for the feedback. We have an ongoing dialog with Amex so we will pass on that request. In the meantime, you can find an always-updated list of options for deposit and withdrawal (including bank and cash options in the Phillipines) here.

    1. Hi Ken, the only cards which are currently eligible are those listed at the bottom of the post:

Eligible Cards are: consumer Cards issued by American Express, Cards issued by a third-party licensed to issue American Express-branded Cards, registered American Express general purpose reloadable prepaid Cards including Bluebird® and American Express Serve® Cards (available online and at thousands of retailers throughout the US). You can find more information about American Express Cards here, prepaid Bluebird Cards here, and prepaid American Express Serve Cards here.

  14. Hi. Very clean app you guys have. Great interface. Entered my Amex Serve card info and the card has a balance. It was accepted and is listed as a funding option. However, when I try to use it gives me a verification needed notice. Says 1 business day but has been a few days longer. Please advise.
    Best regards,
    Chris

  15. Is Abra aware that Amex is now blocking transactions with Abra? I’ve been able to buy bitcoin through Abra before with my Amex, but now Amex is is classifying the transaction type differently and not allowing Amex users (like me) to purchase bitcoin through Abra. I’ve spent an hour on the phone with Amex twice now and they are not able to approve the transactions because of the way their system is now classifying the transaction type. Am I the only one having this issue or are all Amex users now unable to purchase bitcoin through Abra? I can’t imagine this being good for Abra.. guess I’ll be going back to Coinbase.

    1. Hi Clayton, I hear your frustration. While many users are able to successfully transact, many users are not – you are not alone. I wish I had a productive suggestion for you but you’ve done everything you can by calling Amex and you’ve even identified the likely source of your particular issue, which appears to be about transaction type classifications. Unfortunately, in this situation, Abra is unable to do anything. We are aware of these issues and we maintain an open dialogue with American Express but we cannot promise any resolution. We apologize for this frustrating experience.

If using your bank is an option, here is our list of supported banks in the US.

    1. Hi John, no, I don’t believe so. The full list of eligible cards is at the end of the post above:

Eligible Cards are: consumer Cards issued by American Express, Cards issued by a third-party licensed to issue American Express-branded Cards, registered American Express general purpose reloadable prepaid Cards including Bluebird® and American Express Serve® Cards (available online and at thousands of retailers throughout the US). You can find more information about American Express Cards here, prepaid Bluebird Cards here, and prepaid American Express Serve Cards here.

  16. Hello,
I’m trying to transfer funds from my Amex card but it keeps saying that the card is declined. I’ve already contacted American Express and they said that the transaction is approved on their end, and they are just waiting for the merchant to approve it. I am guessing the merchant in this case is Abra. Can you please help me with this issue?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Ido,

It depends on how AMEX categorizes the purchase. We have no control whether it is treated as a regular purchase or a cash advance. I would contact AMEX Platinum to get an answer from their support team. If you have further questions, please send us an email at contact@abra.com

    1. In some cases yes, in some cases no. It depends on which AMEX card you have. I would check with AMEX to see how they record your specific card’s transactions with Abra.
