Welcome to the Abra Stock and ETF Product Guide! This guide is designed to give you everything you need to know about Abra and this revolutionary new feature. But first, a word about us…

About Abra

Abra is the world’s first global investment app designed for the future of finance. Abra empowers users in over 150 countries to invest in traditional stocks, ETFs and cryptocurrencies via a single app. Exchanges between currencies and assets are quick, easy, private and secure.

Abra’s vision is to open access to the global financial system and drive greater financial inclusion. Abra aims to do this by providing one financial app used by anyone, anywhere in the world to manage their investments, send and receive currencies (fiat or cryptocurrencies), and ultimately have full control of their money.

Using smart-contracts as the foundation, and cryptocurrency as the new protocol for money, Abra is paving the way for the use of innovative decentralized financial products by everyday consumers. Today Abra wallet users can:

Invest. Abra’s bitcoin smart contract-based investment platform allows users to have fractional ownership over many asset types. Today Abra users can invest in:

01  30 cryptocurrencies and the BIT10, the world’s first easily accessible crypto index.

  • 50 fiat currencies, allowing users to easily move investments between traditional and digital currencies.
  • 50+ traditional investment assets like stocks, ETFs, and commodities.

02  Pay. Frictionless and fee free, Abra’s peer-to-peer capability allows users to instantly send and receive money (fiat or cryptocurrencies) to anyone, anywhere in the world.

03  Be the bank. Abra is based on a non-custodial wallet architecture, which gives users the unique ability to maintain control over their funds. Funds are secured on the blockchain and accessible only by a user’s unique recovery phrase.

Our Mission

Abra’s mission is to democratize access to all financial services for everyone. Most consumers globally are shut out of traditional investment products for many reasons including geography, income level, education, fear, etc. – which can be categorized as issues stemming from access, trust, and complexity. Abra is fixing these problems.

We believe in financial inclusion. To make finance simple and straightforward and to give access to public markets to those who are traditionally excluded. We also believe that products available to the wealthy should be accessible to everyone. In other words we don’t believe in one product for the rich and a different product for everyone else.

We believe that cryptocurrency technology such as bitcoin can serve as a new platform to solve these problems of access and trust. Abra’s unique user experience makes these services easy to use and completely accessible to any consumer.

When we launched Abra as a platform for enabling money transfer and payments using bitcoin, users immediately started giving us feedback that Abra was now their go-to method to convert between fiat and bitcoin. This was an interesting side effect of how our model works. Our users love how easy we’ve made it to move between fiat and bitcoin without a central custodian — i.e. a bank — but they kept asking for more: more digital currencies, more wallets, more flexibility in exchanging between currencies. We’re on the path to delivering on that ask.

In the end, we just want to build such a great product that we will appeal to a spectrum of investors, from the revolutionaries to the entry-level experimenters.

What makes Abra different?

Abra is a non-custodial wallet where you can store and trade both traditional and digital assets — 30 cryptocurrencies (including BTC, ETH and LTC), 50 fiat currencies, and over 50 traditional stocks and ETFs — all within the same digital wallet. Non-custodial differs from traditional custodial services in that we do not store funds on your behalf. We use blockchain technology as the underlying mechanism to enable you to have complete control over your funds at all times.

In addition to offering privacy and security advantages, Abra is using battle-tested technology to build open and accessible financial services available to anyone in the world. We use crypto-collateralized contracts to enable a programmable and digital native way to trade value all from a smartphone interface.

Setting Up Your Wallet

Getting started with Abra is easy. Simply download the app from Google Play or Apple Store and set up an Abra wallet. From there, you can fund your wallet via bank transfer (US, Europe, Philippines), credit card (Mastercard, Visa or American Express) or via cryptocurrency deposit to get started. Once funds have been added, you can start investing in any of Abra’s supported investment assets.

Protecting your wallet

Abra is a non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet, which means Abra never controls, or has access to, any user funds. Instead, all funds are converted to bitcoin and accounted for on the Bitcoin blockchain. This 100% peer-to-peer model means that no middle man is ever holding, managing or touching your funds at any point in the transaction. So you are in control of your money!

This is a fundamental difference to understand when comparing Abra to other crypto exchanges and traditional investment apps, which are run as centralized accounts that control user funds. As trust-based systems, these exchanges and apps are susceptible to risk as central points of failure for outside hackers.

With Abra, every wallet is a bitcoin wallet that is used to store, send, and receive money. Each wallet is controlled exclusively by the user. Like all bitcoin wallets, Abra uses special codes called “private keys” to authorize transactions. Anyone who has the private key to a bitcoin wallet can authorize transfers to other wallets. It is therefore very important to keep the private keys to your wallet safe and secure.

Words Matter: Understanding your private keys and recovery phrase

Abra provides users the private keys to their wallet using a recovery phrase. The recovery phrase, sometimes called a “wallet seed” or “backup phrase,” consists of thirteen words that need to be written down and stored in a safe place. If anything happens to a user’s Abra wallet or the phone that the wallet is installed on, the recovery phrase can be used to restore and recover all funds stored in the wallet.

You are the only one who will have access to your recovery phrase, and you will need it to retrieve your Abra wallet if your phone is ever lost or stolen, replaced, or your app deleted. Thus if you lose your backup phrase, you are at risk of losing all funds in the corresponding Abra wallet. Abra cannot restore or recover your private keys.

With financial freedom comes personal responsibility. Here is a step-by-step guide with best practices for managing your private keys.

Get your Recovery Phrase

There are several opportunities to have the app show you your recovery phrase, including:

01 When you first install the app
02 When you are reminded to verify your recovery phrase
03 When you press the “Backup” button in the main menu of the app.

When you select the option to show your recovery phrase, you will be shown a screen with thirteen words to copy. These thirteen words are your recovery phrase. The recovery phrase is unique to your phone – no one else has a

Write down a copy of your Recovery Phrase

Write down the recovery phrase on a piece of paper and store it in a safe place, such as the same place you store your birth certificate, cash saving and other valuables.

You may be tempted to take a screenshot but if you lose your phone, you may also lose your recovery phrase. Remember that anything stored online is more vulnerable to hacking. See https://bitcoin.org/en/secure-your-wallet for some additional tips.

Verify that you have saved a copy of your Recovery Phrase

Once you have stored a copy of your recovery phrase in a safe place, go to the next screen and type the words back into the app in the correct order, then press the “Confirm Phrase” button to verify your recovery phrase. If you typed it correctly, you will receive a confirmation notification.

Your wallet is now Protected!

After you have verified your recovery phrase, you will no longer receive reminders to verify your recovery phrase. You can now use the copy that you saved to recover the funds in your wallet if you get a new phone or have to re-install the Abra app for any reason.

Funding your wallet

Once you’ve set up your wallet and secured your recovery phrase, you’re ready to add funds and start investing. The ways in which users can add funds to an Abra wallet vary from country to country, but the one universal currency all Abra wallets accept is digital currency — specifically bitcoin, ether, bitcoin cash, and litecoin.

Most of the world also has the option to fund their wallet with a credit card — Mastercard or Visa — or bank wire transfer. In the US, EU and Philippines, users can choose to fund their wallets via a local bank transfer. Once funds have been added, users can start investing in any of Abra’s supported investment assets.

To summarize, here are the ways to fund your Abra wallet:

01   Cryptocurrency: Bitcoin, ether, bitcoin cash, litecoin
02   Credit card: Mastercard, Visa, or American Express (US only)
03   Local Bank Transfer: US (ACH), EU (SEPA), Philippines
04   Wire Transfer: US bank wire, International wires coming soon

Stock and ETF Investing on Abra

Now — for the first time — anyone, anywhere around the world can invest in stocks, commodities, indexes and ETFs using crypto-collateralized contracts made possible by Bitcoin. This is a groundbreaking use case of Bitcoin and a giant step toward the ultimate vision — not only for Abra — but the movement itself: to democratize access to financial services.

Guide to Stock and ETF Investing on Abra

Below is everything you need to know to get started and review the early-access release of the product.

How it works

Abra offers the ability to buy and sell exposure to stocks and ETFs using market orders. A market order is an order for immediate execution, in this case using the most recent market price. We do not offer short-selling or limit orders at this time. Currently stock and ETF investing is only available for non-US residents.

Please reference the step-by-step walkthrough below for details on how to execute a trade in the Abra app.

Click on “Manage Assets” in the top right corner of your portfolio tab.

Tap the investment asset you would like to add to your portfolio.

Select how you want to fund the asset. In this walkthrough, we will be funding the purchase of Apple stock using Bitcoin.

Select the investment you want to exchange your Bitcoin to.

Initiate and review the exchange.

Confirm the exchange.
Note: there are zero trading fees in 2019 for any exchanges between our natively supported cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash, Litcoin) and any equity!

You will receive confirmation your order has been received. If the order is placed outside of market hours, the buy will remain “pending” until the market reopens and your fund type used to make the investment will be locked until market open price has been confirmed.

Once the order is confirmed, your investment will appear in your portfolio tab. Repeat the same process to add more investments.

Trading Fees

Abra has a no-fee promotional offer for users who’ve registered for early access on our website. These users will pay zero in trading fees on these assets (stocks and ETFs) for the rest of 2019!

This means users will not be charged any fees to invest in equities. However, our exchange spread will still apply when converting equities to any assets other than equities (non-native Cryptocurrencies or Fiat Currencies).

A dividend is an amount paid out to shareholders based on a company’s profits and at the discretion of its board of directors. Abra pays cash or stock dividends to users who have a balance in the dividend-paying equity as of the “ex-dividend” date, which is the date after which new buyers of the equity will not receive the dividend.

Cash dividend payments on individual stocks or ETFs (if applicable) purchased up to one business day prior to the published ex-dividend date and held in the User’s wallet on the published record date will be paid within 5 business days after the declared payment date. Cash dividend payments will be prorated for fractional shares and rounded down to the nearest cent. Abra PTPC reserves the right to cancel cash dividend payments for amounts less than the minimum amount that can be sent on the blockchain of the underlying cryptocurrency.
